CityTag is a geospatial iPhone application that connects the user with public amenities and places of interest in their local community. This includes parks, playgrounds, gardens, cafes, businesses, toilets, change tables, parking or anything else that has a location. The application will provide directions to the location, and allows the user to add new items, annotate photos, post comments and manage out of date information.
briefpurpose: The primary purpose of CityTag is to provide relevant community information to both the local community and visitors to an area. The application will enable the user to find council amenities, government services, community activities, local businesses and any other places of interest.
CityTag uses GPS in the iPhone to find your location, and allows the user to either browse the local area or make specific searches. The user search is presented in a list sorted by the closest distance. To view a map, the user can turn their phone into its landscape position.
Annotate information - There are other useful pieces of information that the user can browse. For instance, there may be many playgrounds and parks close by, but a user may want to find out if a particular playground is shaded or has a water fountain. The photo-tagging feature makes it easy for users to take relevant photos of the features of the location. Users can also make comments about the location to impart qualitative knowledge of the place - useful feedback that the council or government can utilise. Community events - (especially regular events) can be annotated to a location.
Facebook and Twitter integration - CityTag allows users to share places and photos in Facebook and Twitter. A community event can be broadcast to the users friends at the touch of a button.
Bookmarking - Users can add a place to their own saved list, and also see what their friends have bookmarked. These lists are also sorted by what is nearby.
Add a new place - If the user has found something that is not part of the database and would be useful for the rest of your community - CityTag has the ability to add a place.
Moderation - Any annotations or placemarks are reviewed and monitored for profanity or inappropriateness. The reporting system is also designed to report on inaccuracies in the information, and correct these.Reporting - If a public amenity has been vandalised, or is not working, CityTag provides a way for the user to submit a condition report to the relevant government department, with all applicable information. This requires the co-operation of the relevant government department.
briefusers: CityTag is intended to have the broadest possible audience, as it is intended to become a personal utility that contains all information about a local area. For instance the application may be used by parents who need to find toilets or change-tables for young children, or friends wanting to meet in a location for a night out.
CityTag will provide a free online presence for businesses, providing new methods of marketing and opportunities that may have previously required considerable outlay. Although CityTag is currently an iPhone application, all content is available online and will be ported to other mobile devices and platforms.
CityTag has some accessibility features for visually impaired users, and we would like to take this much further! The CityTag application can be further extended to allow visually impaired users to have a "seeing" mode. This would work by pointing the iPhone in a direction and the iPhone would read out what is in front of them, including photo captions and comments. This would be useful for finding public seating, water fountains and toilets. This also opens up the possibility of other liberties such as reading out a menu at a cafe, or finding important information in that location!
briefdata: CityTag is currently engaging local governments and councils around Australia to populate the database with location based data. To date we have integrated the National Public Toilet Map into the database, and we are looking to engage business and government to provide information to populate the database, such as;
- Council assets and amenities like public seating, benches, tables, toilets, change tables, parks, playgrounds, water fountains, BBQs, gardens and parking.
- Council community events and activities.
- Locations of child care, kindergartens, schools and tafes.
- Public internet locations and public wifi.
- Police stations and hospitals.
- Medicare, Centrelink and other social services.

The Immunisation Records system was designed to make it easier for NSW Students and Parents access immunisation education material and submit Immunisation records easier. The platform also provides the ability for onsite immunisation clinic service integrated with electronic immunisation records and patient information (could be deployed as a immunisation kiosk, mobile immunisation education and delivery centre). Work was based on NSW Public Health Immunisation forms and school immunisation programs.
The aim of the application is to reduce the replication of data entry, record archiving and improve the quality of data collected while offering a mobile immunization clinic service. The immunisation application can be delivered over 3G, GPRS or WiFi mobile connectivity.
With this application nurses can go out to schools or remote parts of NSW and use the system to collect, educate and also inform students and parents about immunisation.
Immunisation form data and content is stored on the portal sites for easy access.
Students and parents can access the education material and review immunisation forms in their language and own device whether it be a home pc or mobile internet device.
Immunization forms can be electronically collected, managed and exported. Nurses, clinicians and teachers can create the portal sites within a few clicks and create powerful content that students will find easy to access.
The application also enables schools to create their own customized and localized parent and student vaccination education sites for unique social and cultural needs, for example Immunisation programs for Intensive English Schools across Sydney. Schools and students can use the portal to raise further efforts of community awareness of contemporary immunization and vaccine preventable diseases across NSW. Schools can easily import forms and education material from the NSW Health portals and instantly update their immunization portal.
The application has significant future scalability. While waiting in the queue, students could complete simple questionnaires or surveys created by clinicians on laptops or mobile phones. The additional data collected could assist with further datasets for epidemiological studies and research. Students could also potentially start their own mobile health bank portals (since all NSW students would eventually receive their government funded laptops) and in the future could also receive a short message service immunization update or booster reminder via their mobile phone.
Users: Nurses and clinicians across NSW and parents, students, teachers who participate in the school based immunization program. Nurses and clinicians have the opportunity to create immunisation portals to collect electronic immunisation records. Immunisation portal sites could be created by nurses, teachers or students to promote further immunisation awareness across NSW. Parents would have the opportunity to review their child's immunisation record before electronic submission and receive updates or communications in their language or cultural setting. NSW school students would be the main long term beneficiaries by being able to access and create their own health portal sites with the first sites focusing on immunisation.

Trambles is a public transport feedback application allowing members of the public to provide feedback relating to their public transport experiences. Users can either 'Rant' or 'Rave' about their experience.
Trambles utilises data from CityRail, Sydney Buses and Sydney Ferries to allow users to publish specific details regarding their experiences. Users are able to rant or rave with specific details which may assist other public transport users. This public data quickly highlights the best and worst of each transport mode. The data collected may also help the transport providers identify where praise is due and where issues need addressing.
Anyone who uses public transport will have a use for Trambles. The more members of the public who participate, the greater the number of experiences captured. Trambles provides a means for members of the public to share their experiences, offer praise when it is due and provide criticism when issues need to be addressed.

This Case Management for Community/Health is builtbased on Software as a Service model where the tenant can just subscribe to the application. It can also be installed on the premises as well. The future functionality will be integrated directly to a funding body such as the Department of Community Services or any other institution as a web service. Currently, we are trialling for almost a year now with one of the biggest Not For Profit organisations in Australia an one of their services.

This application was developed to make it easier for clinicians to understand and apply Management of Asthma in Adults. Data sets and information was based from NSW Health guidelines for Adult Asthma. We developed the application to help standardize the delivery of Asthma management plans across NSW Emergency Departments and provide a gateway for clinicians to delivery faster and easier treatment of Adult Asthma.
Purpose: Provide nurses, doctors and clinicians in training an Asthma Management and Action Plan application that incorporates information from "The Management of Asthma in Adults" , http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/resources/nursing/practitioner/pdf/kd_adult_asthma_guideline_np.pdf
The aim is to make the information easily digestible and faster to disseminate to the NSW health users and patients. The application makes it easier for clinicians to visualize the Asthma management pathway, provides interfaces for each of the Assessment, Management and Discharge requirements and offers patients an automated Asthma Action plan.
The service would allow all NSW clinicians in remote, rural and metropolitan provide standardize Asthma management plans which hospital patients could use to send to their GPs. The application is web enabled so could potentially provide access to mobile clinics and internet enabled devices. The application could also provide a patient/public kiosk interface so patients could do their own self test or self assessments and check whether they are following their Asthma management plan correctly.
The application also collects Emergency Department patient statistics in real time. The existing NSW Health data sets do not collect real time data or detailed information for further research or analysis. NSW Crime gives you crime statistics for the various Local Government Areas within NSW.
The following data views are provided:
Map view
Nearby - sorted list of all areas based upon your location
Locations - alphabetical list of all areas
Favourites - save the areas of your choice for quick reference
Locations can also be sorted alphabetically or on the number of recorded offences. Each location can be tapped on to provided detailed statistics on the types of crimes committed.
Statistics can be shown for a single year or for all years from 2001 through 2008. Crime counts for locations can be displayed in absolute terms or on a per capita basis.
Purpose: Gives people the ability to research crime data in NSW. This application makes it extremely easy to compare locations' crime rates and to also view your recorded crimes based upon your current location. Also allows for locations to be saved and compared in absolute terms or on a per capita basis.
Users: Anyone interested in crime rates for their local area and surrounding areas. Particularly useful for people looking at moving to a new area, they can do some basic research on crime rates and the types of recorded crimes.
Data: Data used was the NSW recorded crime spreadsheet published by LawLink. Additionally population data is published via Australia Bureau of Statistics.
Instructions: Usage is straightforward with the various data views accessible via tabs on the bottom of the screen.

We have plans to develop a mobile application based on this website.
I have a financial partnership with DECCW. This partnership has helped us write more information on walking and has not contributed to any development costs. Although still continuing, the bulk of the development was completed before this partnership began.
Wildwalks is a website designed to help people in NSW access bushwalking and camping experiences. Our basic belief is that people are much more likely to enjoy the natural places in NSW if they can find quality, detailed and reliable information on experiences that best suits their needs. We have used data from several NSW Government Departments and combined with our own data to produce freely accessible and detailed guides to bushwalking. We encourage user feedback and undertake our own regular checks on the information to help ensure the ongoing integrity of the service.
This service aims to help people in NSW find and better enjoy the wonderful bushwalking and camping experiences available. The website has been designed to make it easy for people to choose nature based recreational experiences that best suits their needs and abilities.

Spot is a Proof of Concept based on a 10% sample of species sighting data for NSW from the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water combined with descriptive information from Birds Australia and create common photographs from some helpful photographers at Flickr.com. How do you easily report a pollution incident? Report 'Green Meanies' using a smart phone application that quickly captures photo and GPS location information about an incident and sends the details to the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW). If you witness a pollution incident, such as a smoky motor vehicle, sewer overflow or roadside rubbish, 'Green Meanies' quickly and easily adds photo, GPS, date and time information to an observation report and automatically sends all the information direct to DECCW from your smart phone.
As adoption of the application grows, an increasing number of reporters will be able to monitor pollution incidents. This will encourage 'green meanies' to clean up their vehicles, sites or behavior, in the knowledge that reporting incidents is as simple as a few taps on a mobile phone. The application could be reconfigured to provide an in-the-field reporting tool for other departments and agencies, such as reporting graffiti or property damage.
'Green Meanies' takes a task, typically performed by an individual or employee, and through the principle of 'crowd-sourcing', adds potentially any member of the public as an additional incident reporter.
The application moves data both to and from the government. The application sends all incident data to the department or agency via email or form. The data could be used to plot incident maps by time and/or location or to identify incident hot spots. This information could be made available to the public via the government department(s) website(s) or as RSS feeds, or back to the application. If development of 'Green Meanies' was completed, the application could be made freely available via the iTunes App Store. It could also be made freely available for the Android mobile platform. Joindup would intend to release the application API under the GPL licence for re-use by other agencies.

Aqualog is a location aware mobile application which provides detailed information relating to water sampling at over 150 sites across NSW. Using their mobile devices, members of the public can make informed decisions about where and when to swim.
Monthly results since the year 2000 are listed against each beach.
Aqualog has been developed in response to community concern about the impact of sewage pollution on human health and the environment at Sydney's ocean beaches. Using aqualog, members of the public have quick access to water test results for Sydney Beaches on their mobile devices.
If you plan to swim at a public beach, this mobile app is for you. Using your smartphone you are only ever a few taps away from viewing all test results for a beach since the year 2000.
Data provided by the Beachwatch program, an initiative of the Department of Enviroment, Climate Change and Water.
Simply navigate to aqualog.mobi on your mobile device. Select the 'Nearest' option to automatically have aqualog determine your location and present the water samples results for your location. The National Visitor Survey is Australia's primary measure of domestic tourism activity, being the major source of information on the characteristics and travel patterns of domestic visitors. The survey measures overnight trips, day trips and outbound trips. This application shows data related to day trips.
This application allows people to discover what happens when Australians travel - what they do, where they go, how much they spend. It provides unprecented access to Tourism data in Australia and a new way for the Australian public to interactively analyse and visualise tourism data. datadata republishes many of the NSW data-sets in a uniform structure that can be accessed directly through the application or as a web service. The datadata application is a platform that simplifies the process of accessing public data-sets and adds value by presenting the user with different ways to visualise and explore the data. Currenly, a developer wanting to use a NSW data source needs to follow the data.nsw link to an external website, find the necessary file, download it, open it with 3rd party software, maniplate it, load it into a database, and then begin work. This is a tedious and repetitive process. The datadata application allows access to the data in a number of ways: 1) A user can browse the raw data using a browser based data-table with sort, paging and search functionality, 2) The data can be downloaded in a standard csv format for offline analysis, 3) The data can be accessed using the datadata web service which is based on the Google wire protocol. The protocol allows the developer to write highly configurable statements, in a form of SQL, to query the data-set without the need to load the data elsewhere. The data is returned in JavaScript Object Notation format (FSON) for easy use in web applications. How Safe is Your Suburb 2.0 provides a snapshot of NSW Crime data (2001 - 2008) with a variety of interactive analysis and visualization tools. The vision for this application is for it to host a comprehensive set of NSW crime data in the future. A subset of data was chosen for this competition to showcase the potential of such an application.
Space-Time Research has expanded their the original How Safe Is Your Suburb application (for the Mashup Australia Competition in 2009) to enter into the apps4NSW Competition.
How Safe Is Your Suburb 2.0 includes metadata to help explain the complexity of the data and ensure that the user of data is well informed of data quality issues. It contains enhanced collaboration - saved views can be shared with over 250 social networking applications. It also provides more advanced visualisation (side by side pie charts). This version includes population data from the 2006 Population census, and analysis can be based on raw numbers of offences or on the rate of offences per 100,000 people. This allows for more powerful comparison of data based on population per suburb.
This application will allow the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics to safely share their data with the public. It will enable the public to gain greater awareness and insight into crime statistics in Local Government Areas (suburbs) in New South Wales by using an interactive analysis and visualization tool rather than referring to a hard copy report. Users will start to ask more complex questions of the data, and will be able to better understand the meaning of the statistics produced and how the statistics can be applied to their lives.
The tool can be used by residents, local governments, state and federal government, researchers, non-government agencies, and crime and policy makers - any consumer of the NSW crime reports.
The data used is a sub-set (from the years 2001 - 2008) of the Recorded Crime Dataset provided by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.
Count of population from 2006 Census of Population and Housing - Place of Usual Residence - LGAs
Both of these datasets are available in the public domain.
Please note: we are aware that we could do more with the data. There are a few inconsistencies between LGA classifications between the NSW and ABS data (e.g. there is *not* an LGA for prisons) and in theory, calculating % crime per head of population against just one standard year of population data is incorrect. So the numbers will not be identical to those you see in published reports. If this were a production application we would spend more time getting the data perfect.
SuperVIEW applications are designed to be easy enough to be used as to not require instructions. Metadata and useful information are provided within the application itself.

NSWeXplorer is a Mashup application that enables NSW residents and visitors to easily and quickly find attractions to visit. It also facilitates finding appropriate places where they can enjoy some outdoor activities. Furthermore, NSWeXplorer aid in planning the trip to the attraction/place by combining Google map directions as well as services location with the attraction/place search.
The main purpose of NSWeXplorer is to help NSW residents and tourists to easily and quickly find various attractions within NSW such as reserves/parks, galleries/museums and zoos/aquariums as well as outdoor activities such as sport activities (further attractions and activities can be added to the list similarly.) The Mashup application displays information on Google maps about attractions and places that the residents and tourists can visit and enjoy based on suburb name or code entered or even address by a user. In addition, the Mashup allows the users to plan their trip to the attraction they choose to visit by providing information about available transportation means from a certain location on Google map. It also provides information about available services around the attraction/place they want to visit. Consequently, NSWeXplorer should increase awareness of NSW residents and visitors about various attractions/places they can visit and activities they can enjoy.
All Australian residents and visitors of different age groups, especially those ones who are keen to explore attractions, visit new interesting places and/or enjoy outdoor activities. In addition, local councils and/or government departments, e.g., Department of Planning & Infrastructure can use NSWeXplorer (probably with some extensions) to better plan and create/organize new facilities and leisure places. They can visualize the distribution of such attractions and facilities on Google maps.

Various data from different local councils and government websites in NSW including reserves/parks, galleries/museums, zoos/aquariums and sport clubs data. We've obtained representative data and made them available through APIs.

Available services/businesses (from yellow pages). We extract some representative service data from yellow pages under non-commercial use conditions.

Similar attractions, places, sporting facilities, leisure and many other data can be analogously considered to make the application more comprehensive and useful. This could help for extending the application in the future.
The following just a brief description about the Mashup design. The main page consists of one text search box and command button. It also contains some tabs that provide information about the application, APIs and data sources used, license and contact details. The text box accepts a correct post code value (within NSW) or a suburb name (text value). The text box provides an auto-suggestion based on the user input (possible suburb names or post codes as auto-completion guide). It also accepts an address within NSW. To the right-hand side of the displayed map, different search selections are provided. They are mainly categorized into two categories namely, attractions/activities and services. The search will find all ticked attractions/places and services and highlight them on the map using markers. The default search will be all attractions/activities if the user does not select any. For services category certain options need to be selected and run the search again. Users can interact with the map by clicking on the markers and additional information about the attraction/place or service will pop-up on the map. In the pop-up text boxes directions by car, by walk or by bicycle can be used to get directions on the map between two locations. The directions along with distances will be displayed on the right-hand side of map.
The technology used to develop this application include J2EE with spring framework, java script from jQuery, HTML, CSS and AJAX. The Mashup application is deployed on a stax cloud (Elastic Java Application Platform for EC2- http://stax.net/)

The application for the Apple's iPhone and iPod touch devices provides the latest information on the state of the traffic on NSW roads, making full use of publicly available web cameras of the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW as well as its regional roads reports. A link is also provided to 131500.com.au Transport Info and latest weather reports which may impact on traffic and travel plans.
Purpose: To provide latest information on current and expected roads conditions in NSW to mobile users (not restricted to those sitting in front of a personal computer).
Users: Road users, transport companies and travellers in general.
Data: The data is publicly available on the websites of the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW and the Weather Bureau.
Instructions: The application, which is completed and fully operational, strictly follows Apple's guidelines for Iphone and Ipod Touch devices.

Education - wondering whether government schools can still give your children the best education they deserve? How do schools compare in terms of academic performance and teaching resources? School performance data are publicly available but why are we still find it extremely difficult to answer these questions? The School Hall brings school and HSC performance data to the citizens of NSW in a highly readable and accessible format.
State and national governments are embracing data openness and operational transparency, but all facing the problem of what's known as 'Rudd-Speak' . The commonwealth government's failure to convey its message on ETS stands as a prime example of inadequate communication with its citizens.
This app demonstrates an easing-in approach to solve such communication problems. Rather than overwhelming the general public with recitation of statistically sound figures and a glossary filled with cryptic acronyms, we want the government to explain itself in a conversational manner.
The School Hall will add a conversational layer on top of the government data sources thus making them more accessible to the general public. It describes key statistics in layman's terms and provides deep-links to original government information sources. The School Hall will assist the user in formulating informed opinions regarding school performance and effectiveness of the government's input on education.
Many features of The School Hall are still in development:
* visualising past academic performance data: triggered by user interaction (such as mouse over a key word) visualisations will be generated on the fly.
* the capability to compare multiple schools
* the capability to share comparisons on social networks to allow commenting and user generated rating of schools
* inclusion of primary schools
* the development of a narrative engine which could represent data in conversational format
This app targets people who are looking for:
* a quick overview of the school(s) known by name
* a quick head-to-head comparison between schools solely based on quantitative measures that were derived from exams
The targeted users may consist of:
* parents who are interested in comparing word-of-mouth recommended schools or schools in the local area
* students who are interested in comparing their own schools with 'rivalry schools'
* people who wish to promote the school to prospective students/parents.
As The School Hall has the built-in mechanism to gather usage data (ie. the most frequently compared schools, school pairs), the app itself will generate potentially useful data for policy makers in identifying education trends and gauging public demands this will lead to better management of educational resources.
The app can be applied to assist in other areas of government-citizen communication. For the government, this app will be a suitable platform for conveying the essences of complex policies and for promoting public services. Most importantly this app will empower citizens of NSW by giving them a convenient entry point for scrutinising public service performance and making informed life and political choices.
The current alpha implementation makes use of two salient government databases:
* National school performance ranking and demographic data from MySchool website (www.myschool.edu.au)
* HSC top achievers data from The Board of Studies NSW (http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/ebos/static/ebos_stats.php)
In order to geo-locate schools, the Australian Postcode/Suburb database was also used.
A list of key attributes were chosen from the databases to construct the conversational layer:
* School characteristics: school name, sector, type, size, student:teaching staff ratio,
* Student socio-educational levels: ICSEA (The Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage),
* HSC performance indicators: number of all rounders, firsts in subjects and top scorers.
The NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) test results for year 7 and year 9 students could potential act as an supplementary indicator of academic performance, it will be addressed in future implementations.
